The Astros own one of the best records in baseball as the All-Star break nears, but they'll be without their best hitter moving forward.

Yordan Alvarez, who leads the majors with a 1.058 OPS, was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday, the team announced.

Alvarez, who is in his fourth season in the majors, is on pace for a career year. He has 26 home runs, a 13.6 percent walk rate, an 18 percent strikeouMLB Accessoriest rate and a slash line of .306/.405/.653. He hChristian Yelichas posted 3.9 fWAR, which is already a career high. He's seven home runs away from tying his career high of 33 set in 2021.

Yordan Alvarez injury update

The Astros announced Sunday that Alvarez was suffering from right hand inflammation. Alvarez played Saturday against the Athletics and went 0 for 4 while starting in left field.

Houston promoted outfielder Jose Siri from Triple-A Sugar Land to replace Alvarez on the roster.

Alvarez's injury flared up June 18, per atlanta braves jersey toddler the team, and he missed the next game before returning to face the Mets. Since the injury, Alvarez has slashed .286/.412/.768 with eight home runs.

"It's gotten progressively worse," Astros manager Dusty Baker said, per MLB.com. "First, it was only bothering him to swing and miss, but then it was bothering him every swing after that."

How long will Yordan Alvarez be out?

Baker said that he doesn't expect Alvarez will be absent from the lineup for long.

Per the team's announcement, the team is viewing the All-Star break, which runs from July 18-20, as an opportunity to give Alvarez rest without him missing games. Baker said he is hoping Alvarez will be ready to face the Yankees on July 21

"We'll try to use these three days for the All-Star break to coincide with the 10 [days] that he has to be on the IL," Baker said, "and so hopefully, he'll be OK for the Yankees series."
