Smith's reasoning, in a nutshell, is that Ohtani's lack of ability to speak English hurts the game because he cannot connect with a younger generation of baseball fan, which Smith says is a problem because the sport is "in trouble" and needs those stars.

Smith later apologized on Twitter, saying that he "never intended to offend any community, particularly the Asian Community" and called Ohtani "one of the brightest stars in all of sports."

"As an African-American, keenly aware of the damage stereotyping has done to many in this country, it should've elevated my sensitivies even more. Based on my words, I failed in that regard and it's on me, and me alone," Smith wrote in his post. 

"[Ohtani] is making a difference, as it pertains to inclusiveness and leadership. I should have embraced that in my comments. Instead, I screwed up.
