Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson came under fire for a comment he made to White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson during a May 21 game between the two teams.

Donaldson called Anderson "Jackie" — referencing Jackie Robinson — during the contest. While he has maintained that he was referencing a 2019 interview during which Anderson referred to himself as "today's Jackie Robinson," Anderson took offense to the comment, which he viewed as "disrespectful."

"He made the comment and it was disrespectful," Anderson said of the incident. "I don't think it was called for, it was unnecessary."

Donaldson caught a lot of flak after his comment became public knowledge. He was suspended for a game Juan Soto by MLB while players from around the league, including White Sox reliever Joe Kelly, chastised him for his actions.

That included criticism from members of the Yankees. Manager Aaron Boone said Donaldson went "somewhere he should not be going" with his comment while outfield Aaron Judge said, "I just don't think it's the right thing to do there."

And Donaldson admitted during batting practice on Wednesday that he was hurt his teammates didn't step up and support him.

"I think that was tough to hear, for sure, just for the simple fact that I pride myself on being a good teammate," Donaldson said, per ESPN. "And everywhere I've went, every organization that I've been a part of, minus Oakland, has offered me extensions, has wanted me to stay back.

"They've showed that they wanted me a part of their team. Obviously it didn't work out that way," he added. "And that's just the business end of it. And also everywhere I went, I've won. I think part of winning is having good team chemistry, and I've taken pride everywhere I've went I've always tried to help people try to get better."
