Frankie Montas is on the move.

The A's continue their teardown that, maybe, George Springer potentially, will lead to another boom period in Oakland (or wherever they may go next). Here's how the trade grades out for both sides:

Yankees: A-

Montas fits what the Yankees like in trades involving starting pitchers. First and foremost, he's controllable. Montas has another year of arbitration in 2023. 

Second, Montas has a really, really good slider: Yankee starters rely heavily on breaking stuff, and Montas' rejuvenated slider is a heck of an out pitch. That bodes well for his pitching profile in arrival to New York.

Also involved in the trade is reliever Lou Trivino. Trivino has pitched better than his 6.47 ERA indicates, but he still hasn't been great. He's thrown 10 2/3 innings in July, allowing six runs to score, giving up 14 hits and four walks in that span. The hope is that pitching coach Matt Blake can truly fix him.

Where the Yankees lose some points: New York was reportedly in on Luis Castillo, who was the best starter on the market this year. Missing out on Castillo means the Yankees continue their tradition of trading less for less in years they should be going all-in.

Still, it's a trade deadline that fits what the Yankees needed to do: Get a bat to counteract Joey Gallo's performance (Andrew Benintendi), plug up some bullpen holes (Scott EManny Machado ffross and Trivino) and land a starting pitcher (Montas). They did so without giving up a lot of prospect capital, too. Those are, overall, solid moves by GM Brian Cashman — we'll see if they parlay into championship-winning ones.

Athletics: B

At some point, the Athletics should, like, attempt to keep a team around rather than keep trading stars off. Alas, this is the Cycle of Beane, and Montas is but another cog in the machine.

No one was quite expecting the same type of return for Montas as the Reds got from Seattle for Luis Castillo, but it also feels like Oakland could have gotten a little bit more back for a plus starter with another year of team control.

In the deal, the A's got 26-year-old lefty J.P. Sears, who's looked pretty good in a very limited sample size in 2022. He pitched to a 1.67 ERA in Triple-A this yearMLB Cooperstown Collection across 11 games (nine starts).They also get back MLB No. 70-ranked prospect, lefty starter Ken Waldichuk. Waldichuk throws low-to-mid 90s with decent offspeed stuff. He projects to be a mid-rotation arm if he continues to develop in Triple-A.

The most intTommy Bahama riguing prospect in the deal might be Double-A prospect Luis Medina: He throws in the triple digits with a great curveball, but his ceiling might be limited to a bullpen role — he has trouble with walks.

Cooper Bowman, high-A infielder, is also going back to the A's. He's a speedy second baseman who could transition to the outfield in coming years.

In all, it's a decent haul without that top-line prospect back, but good volume means more lottery tickets, ultimately. Oakland is probably hoping out this works out better than the last time it shipped off an ace to the Bombers.
