ESPN's "The Captain" documentary is sure to shine a ray of truth on a lot of Derek Jeter's behind-the-scenes life that miraculously remained a mystery during his entire career in New York.
With Jeter's locked down private life came a number of rumors and speculation, though, and two of the biggest stories surrounding the Yankee shortstop were his relationship with Alex Rodriguez … and the infamous gift basket story.
Derek Jeter-Alex Rodriguez feud
Jeter dished the truth on what went wrong with A-Rod: In an early 2000s interview with Esquire, Rodriguez questioned Jeter's ability to put a team on his back:
He’s reserved, quiet. Jeter’s been blessed with great talent around him. So he’s never had to lead. He doesn’t have to, he can just go and play and have fun, and hit second. I mean, you know, hitting second is totally different than hitting third or fourth in a lineup because you go into New York trying to stop Bernie [Williams] andMLB Collectibles [Paul] O’Neill and everybody. You never say, ‘Don’t let Derek beat you.’ That’s never your concern.

Jeter never lived it down.
"Those comments bothered me because, like I said, I’m very, very loyal," Jeter said in the documentary (per the New York Post). "As a friend, I’m loyal. I just looked at it as, ‘I wouldn’t have done it.’ And then it was the media. The constant hammer to the nail. They just kept hammer Freddie Freeman Dodgers Jerseys ing it in. It just became noise, which frustrated me. Just constant noise."
Rodriguez would be regretful for the things he said.

It’s a story that became larger than life. People keep regurgitating this story that never happened. Never happened.
