The divisional races across the majors are starting to heat up as the calendar turns to July. We are seeing the contenders emerge heading into the second half of the season and the pretenders fading away into obscurity, but there are plenty of intriguing betting odds to consider in the MLB futures market.

Since then, the Cardinals, Braves, and Twins have made significant strides in the NL Central, NL East, and AL Central, respectively, and are solid value options on which to wager.

Below, we’ll take a look at each division and give out some advice on how to handicap them.

2022 National League Central Odds

Best bet: Cardinals +115

If you haven’t placed a bet on St. Louis to win the division, you are missing out on fantastic value as we head toward the All-Star break. In our first look at the division odds, the Brew Crew were -250 favorites and the Cardinals were the underdogs at +175. A few weeks later, St. Louis’s odds have dropped to +115 while Milwaukee is at -145.

St. Louis is in the third spot in the NL wild-card standings, but it’s only one game behind the Brewers for first place in the NL Central. The Cardinals have played well at home (22-15) and within the division (22-14). St. Louis just got back Jack Flaherty earlier this month from the IL, which should give a significant boost to the starting rotation (3.91 ERA).

Nolan Gorman is one of the contenders for NL Rookie of the Year, and veteran Paul Goldschmidt is a favorite to win NL MVP. Meanwhile, Nolan Arenado is hitting .283 with 14 home runs and 49 RBIs. If the Cardinals can stay healthy and pitching improves, they should win the division.

Best bet: Pass

Don’t look now, but the Braves are starting to creep up on the Mets, who were averaging 5.22 runs per game on June 1 and now just 4.93 runs per game. Atlanta has had an incredible month, winning 19 of 24 games. They are only five games behind the Mets for first place in the NL East, which is not horrible.

However, it is still the Mets’ division to lose as they should get back Max Scherzer (left oblique) soon, who has been making rehab starts in the minors. At this juncture of the season, it’s hard to trust the Braves’ starters outside of Max Fried and Spencer Strider. Atlanta has +200 odds to win the East, which is not a horrible play. However, we will pass on this one, as the Mets are still -225 favorites.

Best bet: Padres +250

The Padres are still keeping pace with the Dodgers, despite being without All-Star Fernando Tatis Jr.(left hand) heading into July. San Diego is only two games behind Los Angeles and played well on the road (24-14) this season.

San Diego has an outstanding starting rotation led by Joe Musgrove, Yu Darvish, and rookie MacKenzie Gore. All three starters have ERAs under 3.50 and could help the team win the division. Offensively, the Padres can compete with the Dodgers’ offense that does not have star outfielder Mookie Betts. San Diego is averaging 4.63 runs per game, which is good for 10th in the majors. The Padres’ odds have improved from +350 since our first odds update, meaning it’s best to catch this number now.

Best bet: Twins +140

The Twins had the second-best odds to win the AL Central (+115) earlier this month, and now they’re the favorites to win the division – but they’re still at plus-money. Minnesota doesn’t have a lot of top names in their starting rotation but boasts a top-10 ERA in the majors (3.74).

New York is the best team in the majors and could be playing in the World Series later this year. The Yankees are led by Nestor Cortes on the mound, who is in the running for the AL Cy Young (6-3, 2.51 ERA), and Aaron Judge, who is playing like the AL MVP this season (.294 with 28 home runs and 56 RBIs).

The Astros are running away with the division heading into July. The Angels haven’t been able to recapture their early-season magic, and the Mariners have failed to play up to the standards they set last season.
